Say No to fast fashion

Say No to fast fashion

How is making everything myself any better then buying commercially in a sustainable aspect?

Well it’s not. It might even be worse, commercial production have optimised everything so that as much of the material as possible are used and to be efficient. The aspect you can compete with by making your own is to only make what you actually need and to do that well only you have the opportunity to make garments form your own measurements that fit your body. Think through exactly what you need and make it perfect, ensure that the fit is perfect for your shape, that the colour suites you and is something you will like for a long time. Think long term, don’t stock up a big stash, your taste will most likely change.

I’m not saying that I’m perfect and only make the perfect items, that I love and cherish for years and years, but I would like to be.

I think that the knitting and absolutely the sewing community have taken on the fast fashion trend. I hope that this can be a wake up call for someone more then me, just to stop and think. Choose one project and make it really well. Do that hand stitching and take your time with one project instead of making several in the same amount of time.

Making things is essential for me. It is what makes me happy, calm, excited and more, so to stop making things isn’t an option, but trying to be aware and take it slow to take my time when sourcing materials is.

I have planned a series of posts where I go through how to curate a wardrobe or rather how I attempt to curate my wardrobe.

Please share you toughs in the comments or a link, I’d love to here what you think.

I have started a newsletter, it will come occasionally and with previews of new designs and coupon codes. It will most likely not come more then 2 times a month and you can unsubscribe at any time.

Gift making

Packet pacage gift

If you are planning on knitting gift for the holidays it is about time to start now, if your sewing there is no need to hurry, but I always prefer to have it all done in god time. I think that gifts should be given gladly and with love and if you start in time there is nothing stressful about it. I think that planning gift can be something wonderful, to imagine what they going to look like when there opening the gift and so on. There is something special with handmade gifts, all that time that spent making them I think it is some thing far more valuable then money and I way to really show you loved ones how mush you appreciate them. I only have one rule for handmade gifts and that is that the recipient understand the commitment it is to make something from scratch and will use it. When choosing gifts it is always best to give what the recipient want rather them what you think they ought to have. There is a big difference and they wont like it just because you do, so alway have the recipient in mind.
To make your planning reasonable, there is only so much time, I have made a planer that you can print and use if you want to. Handmade gifts planner click to download.

Don’t forget how much time you actually want to knit or sew in a week, and you probably have some personal stuff as well. I know that I have a fancy dress party to attend and want to make a new dress for that, with will take most of my free time for a week or two, fancy dresses take time, so it is important not to overbook yourself. It is supposed to be fun.

New patterns coming

I have a few new patterns in progress behind the scenes witch means that I need some testers. I do try my very best to make sure that everything is in order but I’m only human and mistakes slips between my fingers sometimes. I will be forever grateful to the ones that take the extra time and effort to help me make my patterns just right. You do not have to be an expert. I’m interested in both Swedish and English speaking testers since I am to release patterns in both languages. If you are interested please fill in the form here. I will email a few that correspond with the the type of pattern that is in the finishing process and ask if you are interested at that time and in the type of project. I’m not able to pay you for this service but I will give you a little something to show my appreciation at the end.

I’m hoping to be able to realize an autumn collection including a complete outfit, which means both knitting and sewing.  I’m interested in both sewers and knitters interested in testing for all kinds of projects (children’s, woman’s, men’s, interior). At the moment there are way too many ideas in my head and I haven’t finalized all the details yet.

I made a wish list in the beginning of the year, of things I want and things I just want to make because they’re so incredibly cute. I made one for sewing and one for knitting, the knitting list contains mostly kids wear although we do not have plans on kiddos any time soon I’ve been obsessed with knitting kids wear. They are so close to my heart that even if we have no use for them I can’t give them away.

Knitting list

I have knitted a lot and I really thought that more items from the list would have been done by now. I don’t know if this is a good thing or not. It might be a good thing to regularly make lists and make sure to make the things that stay on the list. For If I were to make I list today it would look a bit differently, for example I haven’t though of a Christmas sweater for about a month however I would really like for us to have some before next christmas.

Sewing list

This list is much more on track the only thing I almost forgotten is hazel. I think it can be a perfect winter dress but my head turned to summer just after, or before really, I made this list. I think that my sewing is much more organized then my knitting and more needs oriented since I don’t really need any more cardigans already having an overflowing dresser in the hall. Knitting has become spontaneous and purely for fun while sewing still needs to fill the gaps in my wardrobe. An other dressier skirt would be wonderful for I’m wearing my black velvet all the time, several times a week most weeks. This might be a good mix for now, knitting whatever I feel like one project at the time and sewing to prepare for the next season. I have persuaded Peter to let me sew him some trousers, he likes cargo pants and he think that it’s alright to wear them to a party/christening/wedding if their navy or black. I don’t really agree but the shorts I bought him last year in an attempt, a plain pair of blue short for summer parties it didn’t work, they’re not comfortable enough, So I thought that if I made some clean trousers with slanted pockets, front fly and welted back pocket in stretch twill he might actually wear them and they will be reputable enough for job interviews and celebrations.

I do have one restriction when it comes to future kid knitting, different size, because what’s the point of having more sweaters in size 3 months than there are days they’ll fit. I am also trying to coordinate colour to things that will mix well however this isn’t going well, a lot of old stuff have some weird colours that doesn’t really go with anything.

Obsession with lingerie

This is what I’m currently thinking about, whenever I get a free moment, new beautiful lingerie, pajamas and swimsuits.

I never thougt black and white cloud be like this, it’s amazing.

Hopefully I will have time to figure out hop to make similar things soon.

Blog hop

I was invited to the blog hop by Joëlle from The Handstitched Files, she makes beautiful things from yarn, thread and fabric. Some of her most recent spectacular projects are this Fox and Niot jacket. She’s really nice and so go over to her as soon and you finished here.

Why do I write?

I started writing a blog as a travelling log a little over 7 years ago, since then the blog has transformed many times as I have changed and my situation has changed. It soon became a way for me to document my crafting adventures mostly knitting and lately, mostly sewing.

But the more interesting question is why do I sew? It started with me dreading going shopping and badly needing new clothes the fall of 2011, When I found something I liked they didn’t have it in my size or it was way too expensive as I at the time was a student and my husband on a long sick-leave and the budget was tight. I thought, I know how to sew, so hey, why don’t I just make my own clothes. So I started and made this striped dress.

simple dress

I used this dress until it tore and loved it, what I didn’t love was the process of sewing, but I loved the result, so a few weeks later I made a top, and it continued like this for some time and then I discovered the indie pattern community and tutorials for fitting their patterns. I learned how to make retail patterns into clothes that fit me. I no longer had to draft my own patterns in order to make something that actually fit. Now I started liking sewing I still couldn’t admit it to myself but I started sewing a lot even more then I was knitting (oops). I then used all my free time for sewing. I now love making my own clothes and to have a well fitting wardrobe full of handmade items that I made to fit me and not a standard person 10-15 cm shorter then me, with tiny hips and sticks for arms, for some reason I’ve always had trouble with sleeves even as a child.

Now I’ve made more then I need in some areas and started making a few things for friends and family, some of them make their way here to the blog and some don’t because when they’re finished am so eager to give them to their recipient that a usually forget to take photos before sending them off.

What am I working on?

This one is easy. I’m working on my dream wardrobe, for me it’s not the blogging that is the essential part but the making of wonderful things. The blog is a way to communicate to the amazing knitting and sewing community, to inspire as I’m inspired by other bloggers.

Initially when I begun my handmade wardrobe I wanted it to be happy, but know I’m more into turning it more professional and classy. I have a professor that always manage to look polished and neat as if she spends a long time every morning choosing what to put on but I don’t think she does she doesn’t seem like the type. She is the one that inspired me to make my vest Bernadette as a more polished version of a cardigan.

Veste Bernadette

She is about twice my age and I want to be like her when I’m her age, a brilliant scientist, nice personality and dress since. (is it too obvious what’s important to me?)

How does it differ from others of its genre?

I don’t strive to be unique but I make and blog about things I like and since there only is one of me…

How does my writing process work?

I take photos and then try to let the photos speak. It is not always easy and the result varies but I try to have decent photos and post about something that makes me happy one or two times a week.

I’m now supposed to name two other willing bloggers to continue this blog hop, but it was so difficult to decide, there are so many wonderful blogs out there and when I finally had decided, They where to busy to take part at the moment so I have decided to let it free. If you thought this was interesting, please create your own story, I’d love to know and if you do so please leve me a like so I can read it. To keep on the inspiration here comes a few of my recent favourite blogs: – vintage sewing – lingerie sewing and patterns – lingerie sewing and an upcoming pattern soon

Now go over to Handstitched files or had you forgotten?

It’s a beautiful film desplaying the importens of equal rights for men and woman as well as within the society structure. I watched it a few time first for the story and then for the costumes. There are beautiful details hidden every where, a beautiful brooch, lots of amazing hats and coats.

50’s inspired birthday party

Inbjuning 50-tals fest blur

As both of us turned 25 a few weeks ago and wanted a  celebration of some sort preferably with a fun theme, my sister in law had the brilliant idea to make it in 50’s style, and so we did. I was and wonderful day yesterday with the first one arriving at 12 and the last one leaving at midnight. We where in my mothers house since we live 3 stairs up without a lift and some of the guests have trouble walking. I made 3 long paper pentanes that covered the siting-room and terrace with festive pastel colours and 2 tissue paper pompoms (did not manage to get them round and fluffy) in pearl pink and raspberry red. We had lots of home made ice-cream, cherries, strawberries and pizza for everyone and ended up playing a Gothenburg quiz that we got.

  •  The beast vanilla Ice-cream Frozen custard by Posie get cosy
  • My Very Berry usually blueberry – frozen berries without seeds usually 500g blueberries 100g heavy cream and sugar to taste, mix everything together in a food processor and serve directly or into the ice cream machine and then the freezer. This has a very strong berry taste and is perfect as a disart to nice dinners or whenever you want something that only takes about 10 minutes to do. Currants and strawberries works, even if the strawberries need to be defrosted a bit before and then frozen agin in the machine.
